This new edition of Section I will mark the first time in more than 60 years that ASME has published a stand-alone code addressing requirements for locomotive boilers.Section I of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, which is maintained by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committee on Power Boilers (BPV I), outlines the rules relating to pressure integrity governing the construction of power boilers and high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers. Following a request from locomotive boiler stakeholders, BPV I formed the Subgroup on Locomotive Boilers in February 2010. Chaired by Linn Moedinger, president of the heritage Strasburg Rail Road, the subgro up was assigned the duty of developing a new Section I parte addressing locomotive boiler construction rules.Some may wonder why a modern code would address locomotive boiler technology, which could be considered an arcane art. The simple answer, according to the Subgroup, is that steam locomotives continue to operate in densely populated environments where the need to ensure safe boilers is paramount. Millions of people throughout the world ride behind and stand near steam locomotive boilers every year. Moreover, real working knowledge of what these boilers experience while operating and how their various structures work together while bouncing down the track is not widely prevalent.Since the late 1950s there has been a growing knowledge base on locomotive boilers in preservation railroad circles, but it has been outside the mainstream boiler industry. Over time it had become quite possible - if not probable - that a perfectly reputable boiler shop could have the best of intentio ns and still legitimately build an unsatisfactory steam locomotive boiler in accordance with the Boiler Code. In an attempt to rectify this situation, the ASME Subgroup on Locomotive Boilers has taken the approach of codifying both best practices and Code material from the early steam days of the locomotive, melding modern technology into the process where that technology has been tested and proven. The process of fine-tuning this new Section I Part will continue as long as people continue to tinker with the iron horse worldwide. The timing of this publication coincides with a generational change in the steam railroading world. The new Part captures and codifies the knowledge gained by a generation of railroaders over the past 50 plus years since the last ASME Locomotive Code was published.The result of the Subgroups efforts, Part PL, Requirements for Locomotive Boilers, will be included in the 2015 Edition of BPVC Section I, Rules for Construction of Power Boilers, which will be pu blished on July 1. While he generally knows how to keep them at bay, theyre sometimes unpreventable. Before a recent business trip when hed been experiencing a particularly difficult time in his life, making the anxiety even worse, he began to fear getting on the plane (with his companys COO, nonetheless). I encouraged him to be candid with his anfhrer and with his traveling companion. It took some cajoling on my part, but eventually, my friend realized that he needed to be straightforward with his manager about his situation or risk something far worse.This got me thinking though. Sure, it was easy enough for me to instruct him to reveal this hugely personal part of himself, but I wasnt the one who had to face unterstellung people at work every day. Once you admit that you struggle with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or zweipolig disorder, are you just putting a scarlet-like letter on yourself? Are you setting yourself up for failure read in the form of not getting the big project or the promotion? Of course, being discriminated against because of any kind of mental health issue is illegal (more on this below), but that doesnt mean that your concerns with opening up about them arent valid.I trusted that Muse Coach and Licensed Social Worker, Melody Wilding, would know far more than me how to proceed, even though I dont think the advice I gave my friend in his time of need was wrong. His flight was postponed by a full day, giving him more time to prepare for the departure (time he used to visit his psychiatrist, in fact). He reported that his COO was glad hed been honest, explaining that hes familiar with anxiety disorder, having a family member who faces a similar challenge. The trip ended up going off without a hitch if there had been any issues though, at least the COO wouldnt have been shell-shocked. Understand Where You AreTheres something about being prepared that often adds a level of security to things. And yet, I asked Wilding, at what point do you reveal this information to your boss? During the interview? Once you have a job offer? As I half-suspected, Wilding tells me that there is no single right answer. What you decide to do varies depending on the individuals conditions, symptoms, and comfort level in addition to the dynamics and culture of the workplace.It stands to reason that because mental health issues are such delicate ones, disclosure is a very personal decision, explains Wilding. If youre getting by OK, and your work isnt suffering, you may not feel comfortable making a big announcement that essentially reveals your medical history. But, if the state of your mental health is starting to interfere with your work and your ability to, well, do your job, Wilding says youll want to speak with your boss, especially if youre in need of accommodations or are going to need time off. If you simply go in asking for time off due to a personal issue or emergency, know that you may be asked about the nature of your condition, by which point, youll probably have to disclose more information, though this doesnt mean you have to read your medical chart to anyone. Find an Appropriate TimeIf your relationship with your boss is good, if you communicate often, and if you trust him or her, sharing some details of your situation will likely be a lot easier than if the workplace culture is a challenging, stiff one where its all work and no play, not ever. This is when scripting what youre going to say and being ready with a list of things youve been excelling at can come in extra handy. If you and your boss have poor communication, you might consider paying a visit to the HR department first. Oftentimes, these individuals are better trained and equipped to assist in these complicated areas.While most people probably wont choose to disclose any details during the hiring process, if your issue is one that you struggle to keep under control, waiting until you get the offer and sign on the dotted line, after which you begin working and drop the ball on a major assignment solely due to your condition, probably isnt your best bet. Instead, Wilding says, you may need to be very up front and disclose during the interview process. Youll want to frame it, and put it in context, so thats not the thing the interviewer is remembering about you. If youre a part of a support group, it can be a good idea to speak to others about how theyve approached this delicate situation. Many of us have felt over-tired, over-worked, just flat-out exhausted. You may even be familiar with burnout. Maybe you immediately took a personal day or submitted a vacation request. Perhaps you approached your boss about your workload or figured out a way to finally start delegating some of your tasks. Whatever you felt like during that crazy, busy work period cant compare to a serious, depressive epi sode. And if youve been diagnosed with depression, a few days off from work arent likely to whip you back in shape. You should be talking to your doctor or a trusted medical professional, but you should also plan to have a conversation with your manager. Wilding says, however, that if youre in the thick of a depressive episode, for example, it might be best to wait until youre in a better place so you have the energy and can appropriately bring yourself to have the best conversation with your employer.Maintain Your PrivacyRegardless of the conversation you have with your boss, you need only reveal as much as youre comfortable with. You do not need to go into a lengthy explanation of your familys history with bipolar disorder, nor do you need to give a run-down of all of your panic attacks. For example, if you have ADHD but this isnt something you want to state as such, you might consider telling your supervisor that you have issues with concentration that affect your ability to work , Wilding says. Its also appropriate to reveal that you have a medical issue or condition without actually mentioning your diagnosis by name, Wilding elaborates.Although you may feel embarrassed by your mental health issues as my friend certainly was, you are far from alone. Wilding believes that as a culture were (slowly) approaching a greater acceptance of such issues. Were having more conversations and understanding that the open dialogue around mental health and well being can be healing in and of itself. One way of speaking to your employer about your situation may be to reframe the situation as an opportunity, suggests Wilding. You do this by regularly sharing your strengths, working with your team to create an optimal working situation, and being as productive as possible when all is well. And, of course, if youre not already, you should be working with a licensed mental health professional. This person is trained to help you develop coping skills, process your worries and co ncerns, Wilding explains. He or she may even offer to role play with you so that youre confident and prepared before you sit your boss down to tell him whats been going on and what he can anticipate based on what youre sharing.Know the LawAbove all, as awkward as the discussion may feel, go into it knowing that you are protected. The Americans with Disabilities Act, which your HR department should be familiar with, prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in employment The act further stipulates that Anyone known to have a history of mental disorders can be considered disabled. That means you have rights and shouldnt be worried that your employer will act against you simply because you open up about whats happening. Because the law allows for qualified people to be accommodated to a reasonable extent, Wilding points out that, depending on the nature of the impairment, a person may be eligible for accommodations such as a flexible schedule or work from home privileg es. Better than assuming a couple of personal days will get you where you need to be, you might consider chatting with your boss about flex hours or remote working schedule thats not determined in advance but rather is decided when you need it most. If and when you do decide to disclose, the information you reveal will be kept confidential. Since overall well being and mental health issues arent as hidden as they once were, any companies, in fact, have resources for which you can locate behavioral health services, again, if you arent already seeing someone. Sources of intelligence can be measured in quotients. fruchtwein of us are familiar with IQ, or the intelligence quotient, which is primarily associated with our ability to memorize, retrieve items from our memory and our logical reasoning.Theres also a new up and comer, CQ, or curiosity quotient, which refers to ones ability to have a powerful motivation to learn a particular subject. What I spend much of my time in both research, and in working with clients and organizations on, is focusing on emotional intelligence.The definition of emotional intelligence (as first advanced by researchers Peter Salavoy and John Mayer, but popularized by author Daniel Goleman in his seminal, eponymous book) is the ability toRecognize, understand and manage our own emotionsRecognize, understand and influence the emotions of othersIn practical terms, this means being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively), and learning how to manage those emotions - both our own and others - especially when we are under pressure.We are emotional creatures who often make decisions and respond to stimuli based on our emotions. As a result, our ability to grow in EQ has an enormous impact in all of our relationships, how we make decisions and identify opportunities. EQ is enormously important. Through my work, Ive identified 10 qualities that I believe comprise the emotionally intelligent person.I hope you gain value from this and learn to understand the ways you can influence your mind, and the minds of others, by growing emotionally every day, in all that you do.1. EmpathyI love this definition of empathyEmpathy is the capacity to understand or feel what abedrngnisher person is experiencing from within their f rame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in anothers position.There are two different types of empathy. Cognitive empathy, sometimes called perspective taking, refers to our ability to identify and understand other peoples emotions.We empathize based on the reaction to others. What Id also say is that empathy can be cultivated and learned through experiences. Store away in your memory those feelings that you feel both in reaction, and as you put things in perspective. Write these thoughts out, analyze them and determine how you want to treat others in the same way youd want to be treated.2. Self-awarenessSelf-awareness is the art of understanding yourself, recog nizing what stimuli youre facing and then preparing for how to manage yourself both in a proactive and reactive manner. Self-awareness is how we see ourselves, and also how we perceive others to see us. The second, external aspect, is always the most difficult to properly assess.Dr. Tasha Eurich puts forthLeaders who focus on building both internal and external self-awareness, who seek honest feedback from loving critics, and who ask what instead of why can learn to see themselves mora clearly - and reap the many rewards that increased self-knowledge delivers.For yourself, ask the introspective questions, yearn for knowledge and be curious. Having an analytical mind means having a healthy appetite for a continuously improving mindset geared at bettering yourself and always remaining open to new ideas.5. BeliefA major component of maintaining emotional self-control is using the power of faith to believe in yourself both in the present and in the future. Its believing that the people and things in your life are there for a reason, and that everything will ultimately work out for good.Faith alone will not help you. It takes action, of course. But when you combine faith with powerful values like hard work, perseverance and a positive attitude, you have formed the foundation of a champion. Every great leader and thinking uses faith, either in a practical context, emotionally and certainly spiritually.Spend time in meditation. Think about the way you believe in yourself. Engender a greater faith tow ard the person you are and who you want to become. And trust and believe that the pieces in your life will come together in a way that will help you live boldly and joyfully.6. Needs and wantsThe emotionally intelligent mind is able to discern between things that they need versus things that would be nice to have that classify more aptly as wants. A need, particularly in the context of Abraham Maslows Hierarchy of Needs is the basic level stuff like safety, survival and sustenance. Once those things are met, then we can progress to other needs and of course, wants.A want is a big house, nice car, and even the brand new iPhone. We do not need those things to survive, but rather we want them based on our own personal desires or what we perceive to matter to society. Become well-versed in knowing what you truly need to to live, to accomplish goals and to support yourself and loved ones. Make sure you draw a very clear distinction between what it is you need, and what it is you want.Emo tionally intelligent people know the difference between these two things, and always establish needs prior to fulfilling wants.7. PassionateInspired leadership and love for what you do is born from having a passion for a subject or people. People with a high EQ use their passion and purpose to ignite the engine that drives them to do what they do. This passionate is infectious and contagious - it permeates all areas of their lives and rubs off on the people around them.Passion is sort of that je ne sais quoi that when you feel it, or even when you see it in others, you simply know. Passion is the natural desire, instinct, drive, ambition and motivated love for a subject or someone. Passion brings positive energy that helps sustain us and inspire us to want to keep going. And theres no secret that emotionally intelligent people who are passionate are also willing to persevere and power forward no matter their circumstances.8. OptimisticIf you want to increase your opportunities, imp rove your relationships and think clearly and constructively, youre best positioned to maintain a positive attitude. Of all the things that we try to control and influence, our attitude is the primary thing that is always within our control. We can choose to live each day by being positive. Its that simple.When we are happy - when our mindset and mood are positive - we are smarter, more motivated, and thus more successful. Happiness is the center, and success revolves around it. - Shawn Achor9. AdaptabilityAdaptability is not imitation. It means power of resistance and assimilation. - Mahatma GandhiEmotionally intelligent people recognize when to continue their course, and when its time for a change. This vitally import recognition and ability to make crisp, swift decisions in your best interest is called adaptability. You must determine when to stay the course, or when to keep moving forward in another direction.Similarly, when one strategy is not working, try evaluating and dete rmining if something else will work. From the way you treat yourself, to how you treat others, to your daily routine, always stay open-minded and be willing to adapt and introduce new elements to how you think and what you do.Throughout your life, youll need to change course and make assessments on whether youll be happy and successful if you choose one path or another. Recognize that you CAN always change. You can always start over. It may not always be the most prudent or wise decision, but only you will truly know in your heart what is or what isnt. Desire to help others succeed and succeed for yourselfLast but not least, an emotionally intelligent person is interested in overall success and achievement - not just for themselves, but for their peers. Their inspired leadership and passion, combined with their optimism, drives them to want to do best for themselves AND others.Too often, we get so self-absorbed and concerned only with WIIFM, or - Whats in it for me? We have to be concerned about this. Its a must, so dont let anyone ever convince you otherwise. But in the same way that we should be focused on our self-interest, we should also maintain a spirit of desire and hope for wanting to see the people around us succeed.Not only is this a brilliant safeguard against envy and greed, it also revitalizes our passion and drives us toward achieving our next goal. You may be right. Should you even participate in a corporate culture that ignores at least 50% of its workers? I dunno. Could you try to work to change things? Maybe, but that takes so much energy and saying words out loud is terrible. In light of these painful truths, heres how to just barely stay afloat as an introvert in the corporate world.When extroverts are loudly debating stuff in meetings, resist the urge to weep quietly in the cornerYes, theyre loud, and yes, contributing to a combative and chaotic meeting is the last thing you feel like doing. And thats OK its perfectly normal for introverted freaks to have these boundaries. Just dont take it too far by weeping in the corner this could damage your career in unforeseen ways.Netwo rk in your own, introverted styleEvery introvert dreads networking, and thats fine. But youll need to find a style of networking that youre comfortable with in order to get ahead in your career, or at least keep the job you have. You dont need to go to big events and talk to a bunch of people to achieve this try staring intensely at people you see around the office, or writing a long, thoughtful email to Susan Cain, celebrated introvert and author of Quiet. You may never meet her face to face, but she will always remember you as the special soul who rambled on about your beautiful cat for 6700 words. And at least shell never get close enough to experience your haunting stareOver-prepare for meetingsEveryone should really be doing this, but you just know that those dumb extroverts have been out all night talking loudly with the CEO of your company. Thats ok, because as an introvert you, too, have a secret - albeit extremely boring - weapon preparedness. The night before an importan t meeting, write a detailed script of things youd like to say during the meeting. If the conversation goes a different way than you anticipated, now is the time to weep quietly in the corner.Carve out a quiet workspace for yourselfWith the rise of the open concept office, it can be hard to find a peaceful place to get some work done. Tactfully fraktion out the noise and the sight of your wildly gesticulating, narcissistic colleagues by covering yourself with a pretty heavy blanket and just working under there. If youre really serious about checking some tasks off your to-do list, slap a do not disturb sign on that blanket. You got this.Attach a lighthearted disclaimer to each meeting invite you send outKeep it simple, but specificThough I am sending you this meeting invite, Id actually much rather be working under my blanket or weeping quietly in the corner.
